Salesgirl freed in Johor's 'basikal lajak' accident

KUALA LUMPUR: The Magistrate's Court in Johor Baru today released a salesgirl who was charged with causing the death of eight teenage cyclists by way of reckless driving without having her called to the stand.

According to Bernama, Sam Ke Ting, 24, was freed after the court found the prosecution failed to prove a prima facie case.

The accident took place in 2017 in which a group of teenagers were engaged in a "basikal lajak" activity past midnight in Johor afterwhich Sam, who was driving at the time, crashed into them.

Judge Siti Hajar Ali in her judgment said several factors were taken into consideration in delivering the verdict, among them was the fact that the road in question was dark, hilly and windy and the driver could not foresee there would be a group of cyclists on the road at 3am.

Investigations also found that Sam was not under the influence of alcohol and was not using her mobile phone while driving.
