Potential for fintech, Islamic finance is huge - Expert

The potential for financial technology (fintech) and Islamic finance is huge as the industry is very new and largely untapped.

Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector chief executive officer Ayman Sejiny said there is an encouraging trend of symbiotic relationships between traditional financial services players and fintech companies.

"Collaboration and smart partnership can take Islamic fintech to the next stage of development," he said during a panel discussion “Islamic fintech: Trends, Growth Segments and Gaps” at Maybank Islamic Bhd’s inaugural virtual Global Connect Forum on 23 March.

Thus, establishing a global Islamic fintech task force or a governance board is necessary to ensure a stable and standard regulation, and a strict adherence to shariah compliance, Ayman said.

The Government agencies also need to set up Islamic fintech programmes, provide grants, funding schemes for Islamic fintech startups, customised incentives, all of which will help the industry to grow.

“The development of the Islamic fintech talent pool and the availability of the human capital is essential to drive industry expansion," he added.

The three-day global thought leadership virtual conference, themed "Driving Sustainable Impact Through Islamic Finance" ended on 23 March, having attracted more than 500 participants from all over the world.
