PM: Companies reporting corrupt activities will be protected

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has assured that companies acting as whistleblowers will be protected under the Pakatan Harapan government.

Reiterating Putrajaya’s pledge to combat corruption in both the public and private sectors, he said that those who divulge information on such activities would not be discriminated.

“I appeal to 'Corporate Malaysia' to help the government fight the scourge of corruption, both in the public and private sectors.

“It is good for our well-being and the well-being of our children and their children.

“Companies which provide information on corruption will be protected.

“They will not be discriminated against by government agencies,” he said in his speech during The Edge Billion Dollar Club and Corporate Awards 2019 Gala Dinner here today.

The reasoning for this, according to the prime minister, was to stop the cost of business that would end up burdening the consumers.

“When corruption is reduced, companies will make more money, which in turn will improve the compensation to employees, shareholders, and the public as well.”

While admitting that the government has yet to fulfil all of its election promises in the PH manifesto, Dr Mahathir called on the private sector to be more understanding and support what Putrajaya is doing to resolve the issues.

The Langkawi Member of Parliament also appealed to the private sector to ignore political sentiments by continuing to work hard for the betterment of the country and its people.

“Please don’t be easily distracted by all the political noises you read and hear every day.

“It is to a certain extent part of a robust and vibrant democracy.

“Fake news is a reality as currently, social media is available to everyone directly without the intervention of editors and the like.

“We must not allow it to derail us from what we need to do and that is to grow the economy through greater economic activities,” he said.
