Pahang floods: Number of evacuees drop

KUANTAN: The flood situation in Pahang is showing improvement this evening as the number of evacuees in three districts dropped.

 

Clear sunny skies across the state throughout the day saw the number of evacuees at 351 from 96 families as of 8pm today compared to 1,171 from 313 families in the morning.

 

State Civil Defence Force director Colonel Zainal Yusoff said Rompin which was the worst hit district with some 1,000-odd victims on Monday recorded a major improvement after only 26 people from six families remained at the Kampung Rekoh multipurpose hall temporary relief centre (PPS).

 

"Four centres in Rompin; Dewan Kampung Setajam, SK Pianggu, Bukit Lepas multipurpose hall and SK Sarang Tiong were closed in stages today.

 

"In Temerloh, 316 from 88 families are seeking shelter at SK Batu Kapur and SK Bukit Cermin, while nine from two families remained at Rakan Complex Muda relief centre in Bera," he said.

 

Zainal said floods also forced the closure of four major roads in Maran, Rompin and Bera today.

 

Jalan Ibam Kampung Aur in Rompin was inundated with 1m of water and was off limits to all vehicles. There is no alternative route for this road.

 

Lubuk Batu road in Rompin has also been closed after floods reached a height of 3.3m. Motorists are advised to use Jalan Kuantan-Segamat (FT 120).

 

Jalan Serengkam in Maran is closed to all light vehicles after water rose to 0.65m.

 

In Temerloh, Jalan Batu Kapor-Sungai Buluh has also been closed to light vehicles after water level reached 0.7m. Motorists are urged to use Jalan Kampung to Sungai Buluh as an alternative.

 

Meanwhile, three rivers in Pahang surpassed its alert level, while another three reached precautionary zone.

 

Sungai Pahang at Paloh Inai, Pekan was recorded at 9.86m as of 8pm, an increase from 9.68m at 4pm today. Its danger zone is 10.3m.

 

In Maran, Sungai Pahang at Lubuk Paku was recorded at 18.14m tonight, also an increase from 4pm's 17.52m. The river's danger zone is 19m.

 

Sungai Triang in Bera showed improvements after showing a slight drop from 33.9m to 33.65m. Its danger is 34.5m.

 

Sungai Lepar at Jambatan Gelugor, Kuantan also showed improvements after dropping from the alert level of 28.66m to a precautionary stage of 29.35m. Its danger zone is 30m.

 

Sungai Kuantan at Pasir Kemudi, Kuantan dropped to 4.19m from 5.08m, safe from its red zone of 8.2m.

 

In Maran, Sungai Pahang at Kampung Chenor recorded an increase to 21.41m as of 8pm from 20.98m at 4pm. This is still far from the danger zone of 23.5m.

 

Heavy rain is predicted statewide for tomorrow except in Kuantan.
