KUALA LUMPUR: This is not the right time to continuously engage in political manoeuvering when the people are enduring a challenging period due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing floods.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan said this in a statement late last night.

Although he did not identify any quarters or political leaders, the statement was issued on the heels of the announcement by Umno which plans to raise a motion to sever ties with Bersatu at Umno's annual general assembly on Jan 31.

"The party's stand is that a general election should only be held when there is an improvement in the pandemic and the situation is under control.

"The main agenda by Bersatu at the moment is to focus all of our resources on battling the pandemic and reviving the economy," read the statement.

Bersatu, said Wan Saiful, will continue to defend its political cooperation with parties forming the Perikatan Nasional government which agenda centred around the unity of the people.

He said the party will also ensure a fair and equitable administration for the well-being of the people irrespective of religion, racial and cultural background.

"Bersatu would also like to call on all parties to show and manifest their sincerity through high-discipline organisations to ensure the political cooperations entered through Perikatan Nasional would continue to be respected and preserved.

"In the context of Perikatan Nasional, Bersatu will continue to strengthen its cooperation with political parties with Pas, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP)," he said.

On the outcome of the party's meeting last night, Wan Saiful said Bersatu has agreed to hold Siri Jelajah Bersatu 2021 tour in the nearest time to explain the current issues to the people.

Umno in a statement last night had also said that motions that would be raised to strengthen its relations with Pas through the Muafakat Nasional pact, and to push for the 15th General Election before the end of the first quarter.
