KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor registered 603 new Covid-19 cases today, its highest ever single day tally since the pandemic began.

Selangor accounted for more than half of the national total today, its 603 cases making up 55 per cent of the new 1,096 cases nationwide.

The state previously recorded its highest single day tally on Thursday with 407 new cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the spike in Covid-19 positive cases in Selangor stems from the increase in cases linked to clusters, especially workplace-related clusters, namely the Teratai cluster with 502 new cases (83.3 percent).

He said Sabah registered the next highest number of cases at 311, which was 28.4 per cent of the national total.

"Sabah, on the other hand, recorded a high number of cases today due to the increase in case detection among close contact screening at 139 cases (44.7 percent)," he said.

This brings the tally of infections to 55,775, including 12,843 active cases.

The country's Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre also reported three Covid-19 deaths as of noon, raising the nationwide death toll to 335.

Meanwhile, 1,104 patients have recovered and discharged from hospitals, bringing total recoveries to 41,597.

Today is the second day in a row where the number of Covid-19 recoveries exceed the number of new cases.

"A total 106 cases are in intensive care, 46 requiring ventilator support," he said in a statement today.
