Covid-19 deaths below 100 for sixth consecutive day

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry reported 72 Covid-19 deaths on Oct 18, below the 100 mark for the sixth consecutive day.

According to the ministry's data shared on CovidNow and GitHub, Malaysia logged 103 deaths on Oct 12 and the cases dropped to 68 on Oct 13; 88 on Oct 14; 89 on Oct 15, 88 on Oct 16 and 63 deaths on Oct 17.

The latest reported deaths raised the country's death toll to 27,993.

Of the 72 deaths, nine were brought-in-dead (BID) cases, increasing the nationwide BID tally to 5,655.

Johor logged the highest number of deaths at 18 (including four BID cases), followed by Sarawak (13 cases with one BID) and Kedah (nine cases with no BID).

Other states which registered Covid-19 fatalities were Penang (seven), Sabah (five), Kelantan (four), Perak (three), Terengganu (three), Kuala Lumpur (three), Melaka (two), Pahang (two), Selangor (two), and Perlis (one).

According to CovidNow, 68.6 per cent of Covid-19 deaths reported to date involved unvaccinated people followed by 21.2 per cent partially vaccinated and 9.9 per cent fully vaccinated.

Majority of the deaths reported to date were among those aged above 60 (54.1 per cent), followed by ages 18 to 59 (45.5 per cent), aged 0 to 11 (0.2 per cent) and children aged between 12 and 17 (0.1 per cent).

To date, Malaysia recorded 8.6 deaths per 10,000 people. Labuan logged the highest number of deaths at 15 per 10,000 people.

This was followed by Selangor (14.6 deaths per 10,000 people), Kuala Lumpur (14.3), Negri Sembilan (10.8), Melaka (9.5), Johor (9.4), Kedah (8.9), Penang (8.6), Sabah (6.2), Kelantan (five), Perak (4.1), Sarawak (four), Perlis (four), Pahang (3.8), Terengganu (3.3), and Putrajaya (2.1).

The country registered 5,434 fresh infections on Oct 18, raising the cumulative number of cases to 2,396,121, including 89,173 active cases.

Of the active cases, 76.9 per cent (68,612) are undergoing home quarantine, 14.5 per cent (12,935) are placed in Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC), and 7.8 per cent (6,947) hospitalised.

A total 679 patients were being treated at intensive care units (ICU) at healthcare facilities nationwide with 347 of them ventilated.

Klang Valley has the most active cases in ICU with 130 (106 in Selangor and 24 in Kuala Lumpur) followed by Sarawak at 120 and Sabah with 97 in ICU.

Active ICU cases in Perak stood at 65, followed by Kelantan (59), Penang (49), Johor (43), Kedah (40), Pahang (28), Melaka (17), Terengganu (17), Negri Sembilan (nine), and Perlis (five).

Labuan and Putrajaya have no cases in ICU.

In terms of ICU utilisation, Sarawak and Perak have over 70 per cent utilisation at 81.9 per cent and 72.8 per cent, respectively.

Meanwhile, 77.3 per cent of the total population have received at least one dose of their Covid-19 vaccination with 70.2 per cent fully vaccinated.

In total, 22,934,377 people had completed their vaccination.

States with over 70 per cent fully vaccinated population were the Klang Valley (85.3 per cent), Labuan (76.3 per cent), Penang (76.2 per cent), Negri Sembilan (74.9 per cent), Perlis (71.4 per cent), Sarawak (70.6 per cent) and Johor (70.1 per cent).

The country is projected to reach its goal of having an 80 per cent fully vaccinated population by Dec 8.

Another 9,139 booster shots were administered on Oct 18, raising the total number of booster doses given to date to 30,756.
