24 hours on, massive fire still rages at illegal Klang dumpsite

SHAH ALAM: Dozens of firemen are struggling to douse an illegal dumpsite blaze in Kampung Rantau Panjang in Klang, which has been raging since Thursday morning.
Efforts to put out the fire at the 1.2-hectare dumpsite are being hampered by high winds, dry weather and the waste materials, which include highly-flammable items such as electrical wires and recyclable goods, Bernama reported.
It is learnt that a team from the Sungai Pinang fire station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 8.20pm. Much of the site was already ablaze by the time they arrived.
“Our men are facing some difficulty in controlling the fire. We are still trying,” Selangor Fire and Rescue Department deputy director of operations Hafisham Mohd Noor said in a statement last night.
He added that the firefighters are being aided by the police, a team from the Klang Municipal Council and the Northport firefighting squad.
