TAIPING: As many as 10 families from Kampung Tebing Tinggi were sent to the flood relief centre in Sekolah Kebangsaan Tebing Tinggi, Selama, when their village was inundated early this morning.
A spokesman of the State Fire and Rescue Department said all of them were evacuated at 2.28am after the department received a call that their homes were flooded with water up to 0.5 metres due to heavy rains since yesterday afternoon.
Kerian district officer Mohd Sabli Bakri said several villages such as Kampung Perlis and Tebuk Panchor in Bagan Serai were also flooded up to 0.5 metres.
However, he said, no evacuation centre has yet been opened and the department was monitoring the flood situation in the area.
Meanwhile, continued downpour has resulted in flooding at several areas in Seberang Perai Selatan, Penang yesterday evening.
The worst hit areas included Taman Sungai Jawi and Sungai Duri.
Several roads in Taman Palong and Jalan Krian Kedah had to be closed to traffic due to rising floodwater.
Some of the affected residents were also evacuated to a temporary relief centre at SMK Jawi at 10.45pm.
State Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh confirmed that 14 families were placed at the centre last night.
"A total of 40 flood victims including a toddler, eight children and eight senior citizens are at the relief centre.
"Authorities from Welfare Department, Civil Defence Force (APM) and People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) are closely monitoring the situation," he said in a statement.
