PM: 10-year-old schooled me on how to use computer

PUTRAJAYA: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that he was recently ‘schooled’ on computer skills by a 10-year-old ‘chief executive officer’.

“The other day, I was given a lesson on how to use the computer by a ‘chief executive officer’ of a company.

“She is 10 years old, but knows much more than me.

“She was teaching me something quite new.

“She was quick and agile, and moved easily around the computer but I still don’t know what (keys) to press,” he quipped before more than 500 Sultan Abdul Hamid Old Collegians Association (Sahoca) KL chapter alumni at Puspanitapuri, here.

The prime minister was at a buka puasa event hosted by the Sahoca KL chapter.

Dr Mahathir stressed the importance of adapting to new technologies, saying that anyone who did not, faces the risk of being left behind.

He said general learning processes had gone through enormous changes due to rapid advancements in technology.

Dr Mahathir, who is lifetime president of Sahoca, said the world was going through a new period where it was pertinent to adapt to different ways of teaching.

“Now, we are going through a new period where we have to teach in different ways, not in the way I was taught in the 1930s when I was in school.

“Nowadays, we use computers and things like that in order to teach lessons in schools and I hope they can adapt to this new system of teaching.

“I believe that the new system used by the government will make things easier for children to study today.

“I don’t think it will be easy for old people like me to understand this kind of technology,” he added.

Dr Mahathir also revealed the difficulty of utilising all of the features on his mobile phone.

“I only use part of what I had paid for and the rest of them (the features), I can’t use,” he added.

Also present were his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Sahoca KL president, their son Mirzan.
